What Is a Tapp HPA Adapter? Run AEG Mags in Your GBB
Share
A Tapp HPA adapter takes the place of the gas magazine in your gas blowback (GBB) gun. It connects to an HPA line and lets your gun feed from standard AEG magazines, airsoft shotgun shells or a high-capacity drum. You keep the blowback. You lose the cooldown, the gas refills and the constant reloads.
The problem with gas mags
GBBs are the most fun guns in airsoft to shoot. The slide or bolt slams back, the recoil feels real, and every reload feels like the real thing. The weak link is the gas magazine.
- Cooldown. Green gas loses pressure as it cools, so long strings get weaker shot by shot. Cold days make it worse.
- Capacity. A gas mag holds a fraction of what an AEG mag or a drum carries.
- Cost. Spare gas mags are expensive, and the gas to fill them adds up.
Our founders hit this wall around 2014 with a Hi-Capa and a WE SMG-8. Everything Tapp makes grew out of fixing it.
How it works
- Air in. Your tank and regulator feed air through a line into the adapter's Foster fitting.
- The hammer opens the valve. Each trigger pull, the hammer strikes the adapter's plunger. The plunger opens the output valve and sends air into your gun's nozzle, the same job your gas mag's valve used to do.
- BBs feed up. The magazine locked into the adapter pushes BBs up a single-stack channel to the feedlip, where the nozzle loads them into the hop-up.
- The blowback stays. Air cycles your slide or bolt just like gas did.
What it feeds from
Every Tapp adapter is built for one gun platform, and you pick the magazine style:
- M4: standard M4 AEG mags
- MP5: MP5-style AEG mags
- ARP9: ARP9-style AEG mags
- Shotgun Shell: standard airsoft shotgun shells
- Ambi Angled M4: M4 mags at an angle, with an ambidextrous release
- Drum: HPA drums from 400 to 2,000 rounds
Select platforms also take SR25, AK, MXC9 or M14 mags. Running an AEG instead? Our AEG adapters let it use these magazine styles too, no air line needed.
Built for your exact gun
We make adapters for more than 150 platforms across pistols, SMGs, rifles, shotguns and snipers, with over 2,000 unique designs in all. Each one is shaped for its gun's mag well and release, so it seats like the mag it replaces.
Plug-and-play, made in the USA

What else you need
An HPA tank (3,000–4,500 PSI), a regulator that steps it down to 80–150 PSI (150 PSI is the limit), and an air line. Our HPA Adapters 101 guide covers the gear in more detail.
